Welcome to TheraVie.

Empowering your journey to thrive, one conversation at a time.

Welcome

Hi, my name is Ruth, and I am a person-centred, degree-qualified counsellor. I place great value on empathy, authenticity and unconditional positive regard. These values allow me to support you in gaining clarity, building resilience and discovering new perspectives. My role is to create a supportive environment, where your voice is heard, empowering you to grow, heal and create meaningful change.

I believe in the power of creating a safe, empathetic, confidential and non-judgmental space where individuals can explore their emotions and work towards healing and growth.

I work with people from all walks of life and backgrounds, who come to me with a diverse range of issues. I am a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy, and abide by their code of ethics.

My Approach

I am a compassionate multicultural, person-centred counsellor who prioritises professional competence and is deeply committed to supporting individuals and families through their unique challenges. People come to me for help with a wide range of presenting issues. I have a special interest in men’s mental health, families with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), and trauma.

I offer a safe, confidential and non-judgmental space for clients to explore and heal. Drawing from a person-centred approach at the core of my practice, I also integrate a variety of therapeutic techniques and creative methods to meet the diverse needs of each individual.

With a holistic view of well-being, I take a client led flexible and adaptive approach to therapy, often offering alternative settings such as walk & talk sessions and engaging activities to foster connection and healing outside the traditional therapy room. Through this combination of empathetic listening, tailored interventions, and creativity, my aim is to help clients navigate their personal journeys towards understanding, growth, and emotional resilience.

SPEAK IN CONFIDENCE

Counselling takes place in a confidential safe space, where you can meet with someone who will listen with sensitivity and empathy - and without judgement. In the therapy space thoughts and feelings can be expressed freely and in confidence.

A PROBLEM SHARED...

Whether facing issues in relationships, experiencing anxiety, depression or the effects of trauma, many people face difficulties in their everyday lives that can be hard to get on top of. Counselling gives us a set of tools we can use to help gain a better understanding of what’s causing these problems - and how you can move towards managing or resolving them.

MAKE BETTER, HEALTHIER CHOICES

Working together I can help you gain greater insight into the difficulties you are facing, help you understand why you act or react to them the way you do, and see how you can start to make better, heathier choices moving forward.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Counselling and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

Counselling:

  • A term used for talking therapies.
  • Focuses on providing a safe, supportive space to explore emotions, life issues, and personal challenges.
  • It is non-directive – the client leads the conversation.
  • Can be short- or long-term and does not follow a strict structure.
  • Emphasizes empathy, active listening, and helping clients understand themselves better.
  • Explores personal issues on a deeper level.

CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy):

  • A specific, structured directive form of psychotherapy.
  • Focuses on identifying and changing unhelpful thoughts (cognitions) and behaviours.
  • Directive and goal-oriented – working toward clear goals.
  • Typically short-term and based on evidence-based techniques.
  • Used effectively for conditions such as Phobias', Panic Disorder and General Anxiety etc...
  • Research shows (CBT) can give quick result's but lower long term benefits compared to counselling.

How long will I need to have counselling?

How long a period of counselling lasts will vary from person to person and depend on the depth of the issues they are facing. The length of counselling varies from person to person. Some people benefit from just a few sessions (short-term counselling), especially if they have a specific issue they want to address. Others may choose to continue for several months or longer (long-term counselling) if they’re working through deeper or ongoing challenges. Your counsellor can work with you help assess your needs and goals early on and review progress with you regularly.

How long will I have to wait for an appointment?

My aim is to offer a first appointment - known as an initial assessment - within 1-2 weeks. Then we would arrange a set number of counselling sessions to take place at the same time every week, that is convenient for you and where I have availability. How quickly these sessions can begin will depend on the availabity of that free ‘slot’.

Will everything I say be kept confidential?

Everything that is said within the counselling room is strictly confidential - this is one of the main ways counselling and therapy differ from talking to a friend or relative. Once you are comfortable with the format of weekly sessions and the safe space they provide, you will find the freedom to speak in confidence is of great value.

Note that there are some rare situations where a person may be a risk to themselves or others, and there the law requires that I notify an authority; in these cases I may not be able to keep total confidentiality. Breaking confidentiality is very rare though, and only happens after the person concerned has been informed.

What qualifications should my Counsellor have?

A Counsellor should have a recognised qualification such as a minimum level 4 diploma or preferably a degree in Counselling and be registered with a professional body, for example, The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). This ensures ethical standards and accountability are maintained.
